FIRST PERSON: One Kolkata pastor’s reckless love

By Dural Iyer*

When I was younger, I wanted a real way to show the poor and hurting in the area where I was starting a church about the love of God. I brought one of the sick children to my home for few days, trying to give him medical help. I wasn’t able to help him. What did happen was all my children became very sick because he had brought all the worms, germs, and everything into my home. I realized, the hard way, that bringing the child into my home for a short period is not a practical way of helping. I had to try something else.

I wanted to try to adopt some children into my home. My wife said, no, I could not do that. She told me that we have three children; I cannot adopt, take any more children.

I also used to carry a lot of change with me when I went to Howra station because I believed the Word and that if anyone asks for something you shouldn’t say “no.”  But I had to come to understand that is not practical either.

I had to learn to think practically about what we can do for the Lord. It was a challenge to learn that I am doing what God asks of me by just giving people a New Testament Bible, talking to them, and then praying for them.

Let us do what we can, each one of us has his own abilities, talents, and opportunities. Let us desire that one day, on the day of accountability, the Lord say that we have been faithful in the little things.
